Introduction
When your FTP services were established you would have been issued three key pieces of information:
- ftp address
- ftp username
- ftp password
With these you, and anyone else that you issue these to, will have full access to your FTP space for both upload and download.
Other pertinent information of which you should be aware are the:
- maximum ftp server capacity
- monthly transfer quota. (Note transfer is the cumulative total of all the data that moves thorough the server in both directions. So if you post a file once and 10 people download it the total transfer will be the file size x 11)
- excess charge for transfer beyond monthly quota
- web address for your usage stats
- how to verify your usage - See "Usage Stats" below
Usage Stats and Quotas
To help you keep your usage within quota, or to use the services in a controlled way beyond the allocated quota, Toucan Internet provide you free graphical usage statistics that are updated daily.
To access these go to the usage stats address given to you and enter your username and password. You will see a screen like:

This page gives you a monthly overview.
From a billing perspective the only relevant field is the red
KBytes column.
Reviewing the Feb. 2007 figure above as an example:
-
Contracted monthly quota
1GB = 1,000MB -
Usage Feb. 2007
738,430KB = 738MB - No excess transfer fee applies as the actual usage of 738MB was under the 1,000MB quota
Say for instance that for another month the actual usage was 1,800,000KB from the usage stats.
-
Contracted monthly quota
1GB = 1,000MB -
Usage
1,800,000KB = 1,800MB - The excess transfer fee applies as the actual usage of 1,800MB is over the 1,000MB quota.
- Excess is 800MB
- Excess rate in this example is 2p per MB
- Monthly excess charge is therefore 2p x 800MB = £16
- This is billed monthly on your standard account
The stats are able to provide some more detailed file
transfer information on a month by month basis.
